Friends of the Joplin Public Library to offer regular mahjong play

Joplin, MO – An ancient game that is seeing renewed interest across the United States, and residents will soon have the chance to enjoy it during regular gatherings.

Starting Oct. 13, the Friends of the Joplin Public Library will offer mahjong play on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Beginners can receive instruction starting at 1:30 p.m., while experienced players are invited to play (or help new players learn the game) from 2 to 4 p.m.

Originating in China in the 19th century, mahjong is beloved for its colorful tiles and lively gameplay. First capturing America’s attention in the 1920s, studies have shown the game can help sharpen memory, boost problem-solving skills, and foster social connection.

“Whether you’re a seasoned player or brand new to the game, we invite you to pull up a chair, shuffle the tiles, and join us at the Joplin Public Library,” says Kathy Lazenby, president of the Friends group.

The library will have a limited number of mahjong sets available, and experienced players are encouraged to bring their own, if possible. Those attending are invited to bring a covered, non-alcoholic drink if they wish.

A nonprofit organization, the Friends of the Joplin Public Library was founded to provide financial support beyond the library’s operating budget. Membership is open to individuals, families, businesses and other organizations regardless of card-holder status or city of residence.
