James Wilder named to NEO Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025

MIAMI, Okla. – Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) is proud to announce the induction of James Wilder into the NEO Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025. A standout running back for the Golden Norsemen in 1977, Wilder earned NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors for his explosive play, speed, and powerful running style, making him one of the most dynamic players in NEO football history.

Following his time in Miami, Wilder transferred to the University of Missouri, where he became one of the program’s all-time greats.

Over three seasons, he rushed for a then-school record 2,357 yards, leading the Tigers in rushing each year. Among his many highlights was a legendary four-touchdown performance against Nebraska in 1978, including the game-winning score in a thrilling 35–31 victory. That same season, he was named MVP of the Liberty Bowl after leading Missouri to a win over LSU.

Wilder’s success carried into the professional ranks after being selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over nine seasons with the franchise, he became one of the most celebrated players in Buccaneers history, setting multiple team records, including career rushing yards (6,008) and rushing attempts (1,586). In 1984, Wilder earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors after setting several NFL records, including most carries in a game (43), most carries in a season (407), and most total touches in a season (492).

Wilder concluded his NFL career in 1990 with stints at the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions, finishing with 6,008 rushing yards, 46 total touchdowns, and 430 career receptions. Known as “The Sikeston Train” for his Missouri roots, Wilder’s combination of toughness, endurance, and determination left a lasting impact at every level of the game.

He will be formally inducted during NEO’s Hall of Fame Weekend, September 12–13, 2025.
