Alzheimer’s new treatments and possible cure down the road

Alzheimer’s affects an average of 1 out of 9 persons.
Newstalk KZRG asked Doctor Jeffery Burns of the University of Kansas Medical Center, if any progress has been made on treatments:
“It’s a really exciting time right now in the field of Alzheimer’s and not just on the research side where things move fast, but they’re moving on the patient care side now. We’re seeing big changes. And now we have new ways to diagnose and we have new ways to treat.”
Dr. Burns believes we may see a cure for Alzheimer’s at some point:
“But I think that the activity going on on the research side and the diversity of approaches that we’re using to go after these changes that we see in the brain is really a hopeful thing. You know, combined with the fact that we finally have some new drugs that we’re using for our patients going after amyloid.”
Dr. Burns went on to say: “We have a whole lot of other things sort of in the pipeline, and it will only take a few of those things to be successful to really change treatment. And so to answer your question, I do believe we’ll cure it. I think we’ll be able to prevent it someday. I don’t know when that will be. It may be five years. You know, that’s probably too hopeful, but, you know, 20 years.”
