Monument to Union soldiers at Battle of Carthage dedicated on courthouse grounds

A monument to the Union soldiers who fought at the Battle of Carthage was dedicated on Saturday, July 5, the anniversary of the 1861 battle.
Members of the public and interested parties turned out for the dedication on the northeast corner of the courthouse grounds in Carthage.
Dr. Paul Teverow, a member of the committee overseeing the creation of the monument, presided at the ceremony.
Jasper County Commissioners for facilitated placement of the monument.
West Chestnut Monuments assisted on the design of the monument.
The monument was made possible through the financial support and advice provided by Battle of Carthage, Inc; the K.D. and M.L. Steadley Memorial Trust; the Robert S. Thurman American Legion, Post 13; Phelps Camp, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; Sherwood / Rader Farm Civil War Memorial Park; and local residents interested in commemorating the area’s Civil War heritage.
Members of Battle of Carthage, of Phelps Camp group out of Springfield and of the American Legion were in uniform.
