Helicopter to assist with rooftop unit installation at Carl Junction Schools

RE Smith Construction Company will use a helicopter on June 28, July 12, and July 13 to lift and place 71 rooftop HVAC units at multiple Carl Junction school buildings, including the High School, Junior High, K-1, and Instructional Services Center buildings.

This method offers a fast, cost-effective solution to keep construction moving efficiently while minimizing disruption to school facilities.

The helicopter will begin work at 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, and operate until noon. It will return Saturday, July 12 and 13, with the same schedule to complete the rooftop unit placements. Compared to traditional crane use, helicopters can more easily access tight spaces and complete work in a fraction of the time, making them an ideal choice for this phase of the project.

“We are excited to reach this pivotal point in our project,” said Clint Walton, Vice President of Operations with RE Smith Construction Company. “Using a helicopter to set the rooftop units is more efficient than utilizing a crane. We invite the media to witness this event.”

This HVAC work is part of Carl Junction School District’s $18.5 million no-tax-increase bond issue, Proposition K.I.D.S. (Keep Improving District Schools), passed by voters in April 2024. The initiative supports critical upgrades and additions that enhance learning environments, improve safety, and expand district facilities.

RE Smith Construction is pleased to provide the following project updates:

  • Athletic Complex – Now in use by students and staff. Finishing touches are currently being completed. The facility features synthetic turf fields for football and soccer, new baseball and softball fields, a concession building with indoor hitting areas, and a press box.
  • JROTC & Archery Building – Scheduled to be completed and ready for use at the start of the 2025–2026 school year.
  • New School Farm – A new classroom building, storm shelter, full perimeter fencing, and a new steel entryway will also be completed by August.
  • Security Enhancements & Roof Repairs – These upgrades have already been completed to improve safety and facility integrity.
  • Summer 2025 Projects – This summer, remaining work includes classroom expansions, window replacements, kitchen renovations, and the completion of the HVAC project across district buildings.

RE Smith Construction is proud to partner with the Carl Junction School District to deliver high-quality, on-schedule improvements that will serve students and staff for years to come.
