JPD sees increase in motor vehicle thefts: Kia and Hyundai vehicles most commonly stolen

In 2025, the Joplin Police Department has seen an increase in motor vehicle thefts. Kia and Hyundai vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022 were the most commonly stolen vehicles.

Most of the thefts have occurred in vehicles equipped with “twist to start” ignitions, not push to start. Suspects have targeted these vehicles by hacking the ignitions of models manufactured between the mentioned date ranges. In most of the thefts, forced entry was not a factor.

The Joplin Police Department recommends owners of these vehicles take the following precautions to avoid becoming victims of motor vehicle thefts.

• If you own a Kia or Hyundai, contact the dealership to find out if your vehicle is eligible for a software update or security upgrade. The Joplin Police Department has been made aware that there are possible updates/ upgrades available.
• If possible, always park in well-lit, high-traffic areas.
• Ensure that all doors and windows are locked when the vehicle is unattended.
• Remove all loose items from the vehicle when left unattended, especially firearms.
• Install steering wheel locks or other anti-theft devices.
• Consider installing a GPS tracking device to increase the likelihood of recovery.

If you become a victim of a motor vehicle theft, report it to local law enforcement
immediately. At the time of reporting ensure you have the current license plate number
and vehicle identification number (VIN) readily available as this helps for a faster
recovery.

Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood to local law enforcement.
