Kansas AG’s Office files charges in Russell homicide case

TOPEKA – (May 5, 2025) – Robert James Torres, 33, of Russell, will face a first-degree murder charge and an attempted first-degree murder charge, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced. Deputy Attorney General Jessica Domme filed formal charges in Russell County Court today.
The Russell Police Department responded to a possible shooting in Russell on April 24. When they arrived, they located Deborah Torres, 49, of Russell, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and survived. Robert Torres, 49, of Russell, was discovered deceased in a residence. Robert James Torres was taken into custody shortly thereafter.
Robert James Torres’ first appearance on homicide charges is set for 1:30 p.m. on May 8 in Russell County District Court. Bond is set at $1,000,000 cash/surety.
The Russell Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating the case. Domme is prosecuting.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
