“Extremely Critical” fire weather conditions expected Friday

A potentially historic fire weather event could effect much of the area

Extreme and potentially catastrophic fire weather will be in place for the Four-State area Friday thanks to a very low low-pressure system that will usher in very dry conditions and extremely gusty winds.

The extreme fire danger indicates that fire spread will reach historic speeds and could endanger lives and property very quickly.

“We are asking everyone to please refrain from burning today through Saturday, and if you see smoke, report it immediately so that it can be investigated or extinguished,” said Joplin Deputy Fire Chief Andy Nimmo.

Jasper and Newton Counties and surrounding counties are under a Red Flag Warning. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

While the main severe weather threat should stay mostly east of Joplin, the National Weather Service also says isolated dry thunderstorms may also develop across parts of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma & Arkansas on Friday.

These dry thunderstorms can ignite fires and produce very dangerous wildfire outbreaks.
