Inmate dies at Hutchinson Correctional Facility

Hutchinson, KAN. – Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Devon Malechi Stutesman, 24, died Monday, March 3, 2025.
Stutesman had been found unresponsive in his cell Saturday, March 1, 2025.
Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. He was transported to a local hospital where he died Monday afternoon.
The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.
Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
Stutesman was serving a 122-month sentence for convictions of possession and distribution of heroin and attempt to traffic firearms into a correctional facility in Lyon County, Kansas.
The Hutchinson Correctional Facility is the state’s third-largest facility.
It serves only adult males and has a capacity of 1,788 residents.
