Joplin Fire Department responds to residential structure fire

At approximately 11:17 AM, today, February 19, the Joplin 911 center received a report of a residential structure fire located near the intersection of N. Galena Ave. and Hill Street.
On arrival of Joplin Fire units, a single-story residential structure had heavy smoke showing from the attic of the home. A fire attack was initiated to begin controlling the fire and prevent further spread of the fire. Occupants of the residence had made it out safely on our arrival. There were no injuries to civilians.
The Joplin Deputy Fire Marshal was contacted and investigated the cause and origin of the fire. The fire appears to have started near the furnace and has been ruled accidental as a result of an electrical malfunction. The Joplin Fire Department received assistance from METS ambulance, Joplin Police Department, and Joplin Public Works.
The fire was placed under control approximately 30 minutes after arrival.
Twenty firefighters and seven apparatus were used to control the blaze. Firefighters cleared the scene at 12:52 PM.
