Freedom and Fried Chicken Trail launched: A journey through Kansas history and flavor

SOUTHEAST KANSAS —The newly launched Freedom and Fried Chicken Trail invites travelers to explore Southeast Kansas. This unique trail blends rich historical narratives with the region’s renowned fried chicken establishments, offering an immersive experience that celebrates the area’s deep-rooted heritage and culinary traditions.
The Freedom and Fried Chicken Trail, a collaboration between Visit Emporia, Visit Fort Scott, and Explore Crawford County, is designed to guide visitors through a series of iconic fried chicken restaurants while highlighting significant historical sites that showcase themes of courage, resilience, and the enduring quest for freedom.
“As Kansans, we take pride in our traditions, and nothing says ‘Southeast Kansas’ quite like a plate of crispy, golden fried chicken served with a side of history,” said Chris Wilson, Marketing Manager for Explore Crawford County. “This trail is about more than just food—it’s about the people, the stories, and the communities that have made this region what it is today.”
Visitors can explore the Freedom and Fried Chicken Trail by stopping at these restaurants, savoring their signature dishes, and uncovering the unique history behind each location. From the famous fried chicken wars of Crawford County and the Fort Scott National Historic Site to the Founding City of Veterans Day, the trail celebrates resilience, heritage, and mouthwatering comfort food.
