Price of eggs has jumped 37% since last year

If you enjoy having eggs for breakfast, be prepared to pony up a few extra dollars at the grocery store.

The average price for a dozen large eggs has increased 37-percent from last year to about four-dollars-15-cents.

The reason – highly pathogenic avian influenza, which has depopulated more than 2-point-7-million birds in Missouri over the last 30 days, reducing overall egg production.

More outbreaks could mean that prices continue rising.

Avian influenza does not present a food safety risk.
