Firefighters extinguish attic fire at Neosho residence

NEOSHO, Mo – The Neosho Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire
at 718 Park Street on Tuesday, January 21 at approximately 8:21 p.m.

When firefighters  arrived, they initially observed no visible signs of fire from the single-
story wood-framed residence.

The homeowner reported hearing crackling and popping sounds and observed heavy smoke in
the attic after checking an access point. Following a 360-degree assessment of the property,
firefighters detected smoke coming from the roof vents. Crews entered the residence and
discovered moderate smoke in the attic.

Using a thermal imaging camera, firefighters identified active flames in a 10” x 10’ section of the
ceiling above the kitchen. An attack line was deployed into the attic, and the fire was quickly
extinguished.

The fire was determined to have originated in the attic above the kitchen area. While the cause
of the fire remains under investigation, electrical issues cannot be ruled out at this time.

The Neosho Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from Redings Mill Fire Protection
District, Newton County Ambulance District, Neosho Public Works, and the Neosho Police
Department.

“We are grateful for the swift response and teamwork of our firefighters and mutual aid partners
in containing this fire,” said Aaron Houk, Neosho Fire Chief.
