Missouri’s opening weekend of firearms deer hunting season had many more hunters going home empty-handed.

Missouri hunters killed more than 68-thousand deer during the state’s opening weekend of firearms deer hunting season.

That’s down from last year’s 90-thousand deer killed during the same opening weekend.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says peak breeding season was earlier this month, so deer were not moving around as much.

Warm temperatures and an abundant acorn crop to munch on also kept deer from being on the move.

The season runs through November 26th.
