Eight people injured in Saturday accident in Newton County

Eight people were injured in a traffic accident on Route D north of Stella in Newton County around 3:25 Saturday afternoon.

A pickup driven by a juvenile male driver from Diamond tried to pass going into a curve.  He ended up hitting a van driven by 39-year-old Kelly Sweeney of Washburn.

The juvenile driver had moderate injures. His passenger, 18-year-old Hope M. Harris of Granby, was seriously injured.

Sweeney and one of her passengers, 60 year old Lisa Hendrix of Washburn, were seriously injured.

4 others including 3 young juveniles - including an infant, a two-year-old and a 10-year-old had minor injuries.

Sweeney was taken to Mercy Springfield.

The others were transported to hospitals in Joplin.
