Kansas tax relief special session starts Tuesday

Deal announced Thursday to save taxpayers $1.2 billion over three years

TOPEKA — On Friday Governor Laura Kelly issued the formal proclamation declaring that the Kansas Legislature reconvene for a special session next week to pass responsible, sustainable tax relief for all Kansans.

“When legislators return for a special session on Tuesday, I look forward to working with them to swiftly deliver responsible, meaningful tax cuts for all Kansans,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “We are poised to put money back in Kansans’ pockets while maintaining our state’s strong fiscal foundation.”

The deal announced late Thursday by Gov. Laura Kelly and GOP leaders would save taxpayers a total of about $1.2 billion over the next three years and move Kansas from three personal income tax rates to two, something Kelly had resisted.

Republican leaders had hoped for income and property tax cuts worth at least $230 million more over the next three years, rejecting Kelly’s argument that larger cuts would lead to budget shortfalls within five years

The proclamation follows Governor Kelly’s May 29 announcement of the special session.

The special session will take place beginning at 9:00 AM CT on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
