Newton County resident dies following traffic accident near Stark City

An elderly man from Stark City in Newton County died following an accident just after 6 Friday evening on Missouri 86, about a mile east of that community.

The Missouri State Patrol says 87-year-old Nylen L. Allphin was killed after a car he was driving traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch.

Allphin then suffered a medical emergency.

He was pronounced dead at Freeman Hospital in Joplin.

His passenger, 86-year-old Patricia Allphin, suffered minor injuries.

She was also taken to Freeman Hospital.
