Possession of stolen vehicle arrest in Independence, Kansas

The Independence Police Department (IPD) has arrested 49-year-old Mathew Benjamin Whitaker of Independence, Kansas on charges of possession of stolen property and driving while suspended.

The arrest stems from a reported auto theft south of Independence on January 23rd , 2024.

The vehicle was seen traveling north shortly after. IPD officers located the stolen vehicle and
conducted a traffic stop.

The driver, Mathew Benjamin Whitaker was arrested and booked into the Montgomery County
Department of Corrections on charges of Possession of Stolen Property and Driving while
Suspended.

Whitaker was granted a $3,000 bond with bond supervision and remains incarcerated.
