Baxter man arrested after dispute with neighbor ends with shot fired

A dispute between neighbors in Baxter Springs, Kansas, led to an arrest Monday after he allegedly fired a weapon.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says they were dispatched to a disturbance just outside of Baxter around 4:30pm Monday.

They were told that a vehicle was driving down west 12th Street when a resident stood in the roadway hindering the driver’s ability to proceed.

The driver, who also lives nearby, exited the vehicle which was occupied by an adult woman and a young child.

Upon exiting the vehicle, a physical altercation ensued in the roadway between the driver and resident.

The resident is then suspected of retrieving and discharging a firearm and striking the vehicle.

Arrested at the scene was 55-year-old Richard Curran, of rural Baxter Springs.

Curran is being held in the Cherokee County Jail on allegations of Attempted Manslaughter, Aggravated Child Endangerment, three counts of Aggravated Assault and Battery.
