Drowning victim ID’d in southeast Kansas fishing tragedy

A man from Galena, Kansas, has been identified as the victim of a drowning Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities in Cherokee County say 84-year-old Richard Girton was fishing with his son when he reportedly slipped and fell into a strip pit near West Mineral.

First responders recovered his body, which was around 50 feet from the bank.
