Harbin falls through ceiling, treated for dog bite

On Friday,  August 25, the Joplin Police Department, in conjunction with the Missouri State Highway  Patrol and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a traffic enforcement detail with the  assistance of a Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter.

The enforcement was directed towards aggressive driving behaviors and careless driving issues with motorcycles.

At 10:36 p.m. an officer attempted to stop a motorcycle near 26th and Connecticut Avenue after it committed traffic violations, including failing to stop at a stop sign.

The motorcycle failed to stop for officers and the MSHP helicopter was utilized to track the suspect.

The motorcycle  rider drove into a yard at 2724 S. Minnesota, ditched the motorcycle, and the suspect ran inside  the residence. Officers responded to that address, maintained a perimeter, and began making  several announcements for all occupants to exit the residence. Two females exited and were  detained. They were arrested on several active warrants.

After receiving consent from the homeowner to enter the home, a thorough search was conducted. A Joplin Police Department  K-9 was utilized to search the home, including an attic space. While searching the attic, the K-9  located the suspect hiding and was able to apprehend him.

During the apprehension, the  suspect fell through the ceiling of one of the rooms inside the home. An officer also partially fell as well.

The suspect was taken into custody by officers, who immediately sought emergency  medical assistance for injuries sustained by the dog bite. The suspect was transported to a  local hospital for treatment and was released and taken to the Joplin City Jail. The Joplin Police  Department officer and K-9 were not injured.

The suspect was identified as Tyrell D. Harbin, age 30 of Joplin. Harbin was found to have active  felony failure to appear warrants out of Jasper County for Assault in the 2nd Degree, Possession  of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of an Illegal Weapon.

His bond on those warrants is  $100,000 cash or surety. Additional charges are being sought for felony resisting arrest. He  remains in custody at the Joplin City Jail.
