Technology can be a pain sometimes but it can also be a lifesaver. Newer backcountry mapping software helped first responders locate a couple of lost hikers in Barry County, Missouri, Tuesday afternoon.

Central Crossing Fire crews responded to a report of two lost hikers in the wilderness area of the forest. Crews responded with multiple personnel, K9, UTV and thermal drone resources.

The hikers had been in the woods over 6 hours, got off the trail and felt they were approximately two miles out.

Within 45 minutes the K9 team was able to locate and assist the individuals back to the trail head.

The Central Crossing Fire Protection District in Shell Knob made sure to thank their SARTopo software, 911 dispatchers and everyone involved in the quick, successful event.
