Asbury Power Plant demolished after nearly half-century of service

After 50 years, the Asbury Power Plant is no more.

Liberty Utilities executed a controlled implosion of the old coal-fired power plant Thursday morning as the company transitions to more wind and solar projects.

Liberty says as energy needs changed and energy sources evolved, the plant became less economical to dispatch into the energy market compared to other energy generation.

Asbury also faced significant and expensive investments required by the Environmental Protection Agency to maintain compliance with evolving environmental rules.

The plant was removed from service March 1, 2020.
