Dirt bike rider killed in SE Kansas after hitting dog, losing control

A dirt bike rider was killed Sunday afternoon in Cherokee County after he hit a dog and lost control on a rural road.

The death happened in the area of SW 20th and Greenlawn Road, just south of Columbus around 12:15 p.m.

57-year-old Dan M. Hartzell of Fort Worth Texas was heading east on Greenlawn when he reportedly struck the animal and his 2023 KTM Enduro motorcycle crashed.

Hartzell was taken to Mercy Hospital in Columbus where he was pronounced dead.
