EPA Region 7 to hold Open House April 24th in Carthage

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will hold an Open House on Monday, April 24 at Memorial Hall in Carthage, Missouri for the Oronogo-Duenweg Mining Belt National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site (site) to discuss EPA’s plans to expand the site boundary from a portion of Jasper County to include all of the county.

The site boundary expansion will allow EPA to conduct the ongoing, long-term cleanup actions necessary to protect human health and the environment from risks posed by mine waste found throughout the county from historical lead and zinc mining activities in the area.

EPA has conducted short-term removal actions throughout Jasper County to identify and address acute, immediate threats to human health and the environment from the impacts of mine waste.

EPA found contamination in surface soil and groundwater throughout the county. Expanding the site boundary will address long-term human health and environmental risks county-wide, including Carthage, Missouri.

•EPA will present information about removal actions conducted in Jasper County, the Superfund Remedial (cleanup) process, Technical Assistance Needs Assessment (TANA), and Community Involvement Plan (CIP) Update, with opportunities for the community to share their thoughts and concerns.
