Joplin Schools announces Fred Laas Teacher of the Year award winner

JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin Schools is pleased to announce Mrs. Kelly Davis as the 2022-23 Fred Laas Teacher of the Year award winner.

Davis is a third grade teacher at McKinley Elementary, where she has taught for 19 years.

She was nominated by her coworkers and administrators at McKinley, and was awarded at a ceremony this
morning in front of students, staff, and her family members who were invited for the announcement.

McKinley Principal Jason Riddle said he’s proud of Mrs. Davis’ nomination and award, and that while
she would never seek or claim to deserve the title of Teacher of the Year, it is one she well deserves.

“Kelly intentionally encourages and provides mentorship for our new teachers,” Riddle said. “She is the
person most everyone goes to for advice about curriculum, technology, and anything else. She pours
into others and asks for nothing in return, and is always focused on creating strong relationships with
students and parents.”

As a result of being chosen as the district’s Teacher of the Year, Davis will be nominated for the
Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Regional Teacher of the Year
Award later this spring.

The Fred Laas Teacher of the Year program has been used in Joplin Schools for more than 20 years as a way to highlight and recognize the outstanding educators in the district who go above and beyond to lead their students, coworkers, and community to excellence.

“We have so many wonderful educators in Joplin Schools, and many who would deserve to be named as Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Davis qualifies in every way,” said Joplin Schools superintendent Dr. Kerry Sachetta.

“We are so proud of the way she cares for her students, fellow teachers and staff at McKinley. She’s a great example of the leadership and collaboration we strive for to give our kids the best education possible.”
