3.1 level earthquake felt in New Madrid Seismic Zone

February is Missouri Earthquake Month.

Thursday night, right on time, there was an earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ).

The earthquake registered 3.1 in magnitude and could be felt by people in part of that area.

State officials are urging citizens to be educated on the potential dangers and damages of earthquakes.

The biggest earthquakes ever recorded in what is now the continental United States occurred in that area in 1811-1812.

Damage was negligible because there were no large cities in existence in that area at the time.

That is not the case today.
