Kansas State Senator Hilderbrand announces resignation

A member of the Kansas State Senate has announced his decision to retire, just days before the start of the next legislative session.

Republican Richard Hilderbrand of Baxter Springs has turned in his resignation, according to Senate leaders.

Hilderbrand reportedly resigned via an email to the Secretary of State's office.

Hilderbrand reportedly said the resignation will allow him to pay more attention to his business.

His retirement takes effect as of Sunday.

The legislative session begins on Monday.

Hilderbrand has served in the Senate since 2017 and was elected majority whip by fellow Republicans.

He represented Cherokee, Crawford and Bourbon counties.
