Missouri gender pay gap is narrowing

The gender-based wage gap in Missouri and the rest of the nation has narrowed in the last few years.

But, disparities are still being noted on Census reports.

Equal Pay Day was this week of last year, but that day timed to represent how far into the year women have to work to equal that amount of time what men earned the previous year. It was March 15 this year, which is earlier than it’s ever been since it was first marked in 1996.

In 2020, women earned 83 cents to every dollar earned by men.

In Missouri, the gender pay gap was a little more that 10-thousand dollars on average in 2019. Next door in Illinois, women earned almost 13-thousand dollars less.

There are many factors that contribute to the earnings differences between women and men including age, the number of hours a person works, the presence of children, and education. Also, the type of occupation held between genders contributes to the gaps.
