UPDATE: Webb City man dead after officer-involved shooting

More details have been released regarding an altercation that provoked an officer-involved shooting in Webb City last week that has now claimed the life of one man and has another facing several charges.

Webb City Police tell us that it all started around 9:15 pm Thursday, August 5, when they were called to the 800 block of East Fountain Road in reference to trespassing and illegal dumping.

Upon their arrival, officers encountered several subjects in a truck with a trailer, claiming the truck had apparently driven around a chain that was strung between two t-posts.

Police say that during an altercation with an officer, 36-year-old Aler Escobar, of Webb City, gained control of that officer’s taser and began tasing him on the ground. Police say Escobar also tried to gain control of the officer’s duty weapon and that’s when the officer discharged said weapon, hitting Escobar once.

The officer was able to gain control of Escobar and after securing him in handcuffs, started administering medical attention. Escobar was then taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office has charged a second suspect, 32-year-old Maqueir Alincer Escobar-Velasquez, of Carthage, with Felony Resisting a Lawful Detention and two counts of Assaulting a Police Officer. He is being held in the Jasper County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond.

Four other subjects who were detained at the incident have been interviewed and released without any charges.

The two responding officers who were injured in the incident are recovering and have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol – Division of Drug & Crime Control.
