Struggle for Statehood exhibit at History Museum on the Square

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—The History Museum on the Square will host “The Struggle for Statehood,” a traveling exhibit commemorating the 2021 Bicentennial of Missouri statehood. It was created by the Missouri Humanities Council in partnership with the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy at the University of Missouri, partners in the Bicentennial Alliance.
Support for programming is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibit will be on display from June 9th to July 4th during regular museum hours. This exhibit is free with paid general admission.
s part of the exhibit’s programming, the History Museum on the Square will also offer two free programs presented in person at the historic Fox Theatre, located at 157 Park Central Square, and virtually. Pioneers and Founding of Springfield will be presented at the historic Fox Theatre and virtually on Friday, June 11th at 10 am. We will examine the struggles of early Springfield, study Springfield’s origins and incorporation, the causes of the westward expansion, and get a glimpse of the lives of Springfield’s first settlers. Guests will learn more about North Springfield and the significance of the Frisco Railroad to our city’s rise in stature.
African American Heritage will be presented at the historic Fox Theatre and virtually on Saturday, June 19th at 2 pm. We will explore Springfield’s African American heritage through various topics including sports, music, education, and the importance of community.
About History Museum on the Square
History Museum on the Square is located at 154 Park Central Square in Springfield, Missouri and was named the 2019 #1 Best New Attraction in the Country by readers of USA TODAY. Admission rates for the museum are $16 for adults; $13 for seniors (65-plus), students of any age with a valid ID, and members of the military their families; $10 for children ages 4-12; and free to those under the age of three. The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. Groups of ten or more can be accommodated with 48-hours’-notice.
