Missouri Senate votes to limit police use of chokeholds

(AP) — The Missouri Senate has voted to limit when police can use chokeholds. The bill’s 31-2 bipartisan passage Wednesday in the GOP-led Senate represents a rare step by state lawmakers to take action in response to police violence. Critics say little has been done by Missouri’s Republican Legislature since a Ferguson police officer fatally shot unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown in 2014. Suburban St. Louis Sen. Brian Williams this year proposed banning police chokeholds following George Floyd’s death. The bill was pared back to only allow police to use chokeholds in self-defense if they or someone else are in serious danger.
