American Airlines suspending Joplin flights to Chicago

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, American Airlines is halting flights from Joplin to Chicago. Read the full press release below:

As a result of the 96% decline in the airline industry due to the COVID-19 emergency, American Airlines has recently suspended their Chicago flight from the Joplin Regional Airport. American will continue to offer the daily Dallas/Fort Worth flights from Joplin.

“Due to the severe impact of the coronavirus outbreak both in the United states as well as the international markets, the number of flights offered has been significantly reduced. It is affecting many airports,” said Steve Stockam, Airport Manager. “Unfortunately, our Chicago flight was pulled from the schedule at this time by American Airlines.

“Since our initial flights to Chicago, our numbers have been strong and growing every month, so it’s unfortunate that this flight was included in American’s response to their reduced operation plan. Joplin is not alone in this type of action. Virtually every city that were dual hubs are being reduced to one. We understand their need to do this, and we are optimistic that the airline industry will rebound, as the country reopens and people return to flight travel.”

In June 2019, American began the Chicago flights twice daily. Stockam noted that the flight appealed to both the leisure and business traveler because it provided connections to the East Coast and worldwide destinations.

“We understand that this move was necessary for American’s business sustainability. All areas have been impacted by this virus,” said Mayor Gary Shaw. “We will be working through this transition with them as our country and city recovers. Joplin had a strong showing for this flight, and we’re optimistic that we’ll be flying to Chicago again one day. We’ll just have to wait until the time is right following this public health crisis.”
