Runner Struck By Lightning Identified

The runner that was killed by lightning as he was about to cross the finish line in a 50k trail race in southeast Kansas on Saturday has been identified as 33-year-old Thomas Stanley, of Andover. That tragedy occurred at the Elk City State Park in Independence.

FlatRock Race Director Carolyn Robinson says many runners and officials tried to give Stanley CPR and first-aid, but were unsuccessful. Robinson says his wife was presented the medal he would have received. The couple had three children.

This year, 18 people in the U.S have been killed when they were struck by lightning. The odds of being hit by lightning in any one year in the U.S. is 1 in 700,000.
