More than 40 homes in Murphysburg could soon be added to the National Register of Historic Places. The northwest Joplin neighborhood located between 1st and 7th Street, and Byers and Sergeant has been trying to get on the register since 1992. A meeting was held Tuesday night with residents to go over the criteria to apply. Community and Development Planner Matt Wright tells News Talk KZRG the requirements.
"Anything over 50 years old depending on what kind of architectural value and historical value the building maintained. The association with history, whether it be just be the general development of the community, or if it's associated with any historic person or events."
Wright says one of the incentives of making the register would be tax credits to the property owners so they can rehab the homes.
