JPD Sees Increase in Traffic Accidents

Joplin Police report 151 traffic accidents took place within the city last month. That number is just up from last year's total of 147 in May. Corporal Brian Henderson breaks down last month's statistics.

"We show that there 121 non-injury crashes, 29 injury crashes, and one fatal crash."

Henderson says the slight increase isn't something they're overly concerned about, but they're always trying to get that number closer to zero. He tells News Talk KZRG what they're doing to better those statistics.

"We do receive grant money from the Department of Transportation where we can set up enforcement efforts. We would have extra officers on the streets at different times, we do have seat belt campaigns where we'll be out looking for seat belt violations."

In addition, the department also offers educational training, such as showing parents how to properly install car seats . So far, 632 accidents have been reported in Joplin this year.
