Local Vets on Lookout for "Bobcat Fever"

Local cat owners need to be on the lookout for a new disease that's usually fatal. Dr. Ben Leavens of Main Street Pet Care in Joplin tells News Talk KZRG it's called "Bobcat Fever."

"We always call it Cytox, but it was discovered in Missouri in 1974... Missouri is where the first case was reported. We don't know where it came from, probably a zoo animal imported from Africa."

It comes from an infected tick. Unfortunately, once it's diagnosed, it's a coin-toss as to whether the cat will live or die, and there's currently no known treatment. Leavens says you should check your cats for ticks if they ever spend time outside, and if you have an indoor cat, you should make sure you're not bringing any ticks inside with you.
