Joplin Habitat Breaks Ground On New Home

A Joplin woman got to break ground on her first owned home Saturday morning. Stephanie Roper tells News Talk KZRG she lost her rented home shortly after the May 2011 tornado, when she was approached by Immanuel Lutheran Church.

"After the storm, we had to move into a homeless shelter, and they offered to store some of my things. They've been with us since the beginning, and finding out they wanted to sponsor my home was just amazing."

She and her 13-year-old son Trey will put in what's called "sweat equity" time to help build the home with the Joplin Habitat for Humanity. The home's being entirely funded by Immanuel Lutheran. The church's Trent Davis tells News Talk KZRG that's not all.

"We're also helping to manage about 12 other Habitat homes. It's a good partnership."
