The city of Joplin will lose a cloverleaf in exchange for a diamond.
The interchange at I-44 and Rangeline road in Joplin will see some major changes beginning today, August 13th as the Cloverleaf interchange transitions to a new Diverging Diamond design.
Greg Chapman, a Joplin resident engineer, tells News Talk KZRG while the design is dramatically different than what you may be used to, MODOT has seen incredible results in Springfield, Missouri where a Diverging Diamond Interchange replaced a Cloverleaf. He says 97% of drivers said they felt safer with the DDI and 95% felt there was less congestion. Chapman says there was a 60% reduction in crashes during a 5 month period as well.
Chapman projects that the transition will be completed next year by the end of October. In the meantime you can expect to see construction beginning today. That will mean narrow lanes, slower speeds and work zones for Exit 8.
